If you're new to the subjects of Dianetics and Scientology and haven't read the page on
dianetics and the reactive mind

OK. So you have some idea of what dianetics is about. If engrams, secondaries and locks were
all there was to it, it wouldn't be a very useful subject. Fortunately Dianetics also
includes a procedure called "Dianetic Auditing" to help people become free of the effects
of engrams.
"Audit" is a word which means to listen. It has a more common use in society today that has
to do with examining a company's financial records, but don't get confused. We don't mean that
here. "Auditing" is the activity or procedure that one goes through in order to be "audited".
An "Dianeitc Auditor" is someone skilled in "Dianetic Auditing" procedures.
So, how does it work? Well, the full subject is far too vast to go into detail here about it
all. However, briefly, engrams, secondaries and locks exist in what are known as "chains",
linked by similar content. The person may to some extent be aware of the contents of the
chain. But, invariably, the earliest engram in the chain (known as the "basic") contains some
aspect of it's content which is uninspected, unknown to the individual.
The process of Dianetic Auditing gradiently brings a person to confront, or become aware of
these moments of pain and unconsciousness thus reducing their ability to react upon the
individual (or reduce their "aberrative conent" as a Dianetic Auditor might say). Eventually,
when the basic on the chain has been thoroughly viewed, the whole chain is "earsed". This frees
a person from their troubles in that particular area. When basic on a chain is erased a person looks
bright, happy and may experience considerable relief. Normally the person has a realisation
(or cognition as it is sometimes called) about life at this point.
Dianetic auditing frees a person from unwanted feelings, sensations, attitudes and emotions
caused by past moments of pain and unconsciousness, thus restroing to him or her an
appreciation of life.
Eventually, when all a person's chains of engrams are gone and Dianetic Auditing is complete,
the state of Clear is achieved. If you'd like to read some success stories of people who have
"gone Clear", click this link. Dianetic Auditing is, today,
usually delivered in two styles. The first, which is typcially done early in a person's
Auditing, is known as "Book 1" and is based upon the book "Dianetics, the Modern Science of
Mental Health" by L. Ron Hubbard. The other type is known as "New Era Dianetic Auditing" (or
NED for short). It is also based on the same principles, but incorporates all the latest
techniques. For success stories from people who have had
Book 1 Auditing, click this link.
A person receiving auditing is generally known as a "Pre-Clear" or "Preclear" or simply
"PC" for short (not to be confused with a computer - though the pun is rather apt in some
ways). The term "Clear"
comes from an analogy with an old fashioned adding machine (similar to a modern calculator). If
one of the buttons was stuck down, the adding machine would always give wrong answers. In other
words, to get the adding machine to work, one had to "clear" the machine of old, no longer
relevant input.
